The Carom Diaries - C20 Day 3 - 13 Sep 2012

This is the first double header of the tournament.

League Match 3: Giridhar/Ganesh vs Krishna/Rohini

Toss: Giridhar/Ganesh

Match Report:

They came. They saw. They Conquered. Giridhar & Ganesh lived up to their reputation as the “brothers of destruction”. They won by 10 points in 6min 6sec setting a record for the quickest win in the tournament so far thus creating a benchmark very difficult to match. To their credit, Rohini & Krishna tried their best. But it just wasn’t enough to stop this very powerful team who seem to have an eye on the trophy at this stage itself. Can someone stop them?

Winners: Giridhar/Ganesh

PS: How Rohini managed 2 pawns remains a mystery. The FBI is at it. There are rumors that she might have been coached by the one and only SAU.

League Match 4: Rajesh/Varsha vs Shashank/Sharada

Toss: Rajesh/Varsha

Match Report:

Two contrasting teams here. Rajesh very serious about winning, at the same equally confident about losing whereas Varsha is of the happy-go-lucky kind demonstrated by the fact that she had never played carom since her school days & didn’t bother to practice at all. Both Shashank/Sharada went into the match after a lot of practice and banked on their abilities to take them through.

Varsha surprised everyone when she showed that she had the skill to hit a “straight pawn” into the pocket J. This one act scared Shashank so much that he went out of form instantly. It was left to Sharada to manage the show till he recovered in a round or two. Rajesh was his usual self, not missing out on easy chances. Both teams matched each other shot to shot. Everything was going well until Sharada succumbed to Ashish’s non-stop commentary which was actually not serving any purpose (Something that he has learnt from Ramiz Raja). Rajesh had his own brain-freeze, hand shivering moments which almost resulted in “burning”. After a very tough fight for the queen, Rajesh did the honours & their team qualified for the QF after a very tense 11min 44sec. In the hindsight, Shashank/Sharada had their moments which they could have seized to produce a different result.

Winners: Rajesh/Varsha
